Even the most health-conscious people can fail to consider how nail polish is affecting their bodies. But a recent study found that many of the most popular nail polish brands in America and Europe are much more harmful than they would seem.
What did the study show?
The scientists examined 20 women who used nail polish regularly and checked them for traces of chemicals. The results showed that the women had numerous toxins in their bodies which they got from nail polish.
The toxins identified were triphenyl phosphate, which appeared in their bodies about 10 hours after putting nail polish on. Another study confirmed these results, and also discovered that 8 out of 10 nail polish brands contain this dangerous chemical. Only six of them have highlighted the chemical on their labels.
Another study that came as a result of the first study, the same team of scientists checked ten popular nail polishes for presence of triphenyl phosphate and found that this chemical is present in 8 out of 10 polishes.
Six of them have highlighted the presence of this chemical on their labels.
This could mean that up to 20% of nail polishes sold on the market contain a dangerous chemical that isn’t listed as an ingredient.
TPHP or triphenyl phosphate is linked to several diseases and conditions and it negatively affects your endocrine system. According to Dr. Heather Stapleton, one of the leading scientists on the study, numerous studies have shown that triphenyl phosphate can directly affect the production of hormones, reproduction and metabolism.
As they need proper development and hormonal balance in their age, teenage girls who use nail polish every day are especially affected.
TPHP is considered a:
– Endocrine toxin
– Reproductive toxin
– Skin allergen and irritant
Formaldehyde is a well known carcinogen that can easily dissolve in tap water and even in air. This is where the strong scent from nail polishes comes from. If a person is in touch with this toxin that person can experience symptoms as asthma, breathing difficulties, throat problem etc. Obviously, individuals dealing with chronic diseases are more prone to the negative effects of formaldehyde.
Toluene is a dangerous substance which is linked to child development disruptions, and in some cases, it was found in mother’s milk as well. Toluene is also a strong skin irritant.
Some nail polishes use this substance as a replacement for TPHP, but dibutyl phthalate is just as dangerous. Like TPHP, it negatively affects the reproductive system and disrupts the hormonal balance in the human body.
