According to Oxford University researcher Dr. Paul Kelley, forcing staff to work before 10 a.m. is equivalent to torture. It is also making employees ill, exhausted, and stressed.
“Before the age of 55, the circadian rhythms of adults are completely out of sync with regular nine-to-five working hours, posing a “serious threat” to performance, mood and mental health.”
Thus, Kelley believes there needs to be a change in work and school starting times so that they fit with the natural clock of humans.
When we start work before 10 am every day, we’re unnaturally interfering with our Circadian Rhythm, thus throwing many aspects of our health out of balance and, therefore, scientifically torturing ourselves.
“We cannot change our 24-hour rhythms. You cannot learn to get up at a certain time…your liver and your heart have different patterns and you’re asking them to shift two or three hours.”Dr. KellySince the boom of the industrial revolution in the early 20th century, human beings have been flung into a regular work pattern, with the introduction of the 8-hour working day was designed around maximizing 24/7 factory productivity, without taking the natural human body clock into consideration. Our ancient bodies, however, have evolved around the daily cycle of sunlight, not these modern day strategies of business and commerce!
Dr Paul Kelley, speaking at the Dr. Paul Kelley, speaking at the British Science Festival says:
“We’ve got a sleep deprived society” and “This is an international issue. Everybody is suffering and they don’t have to.”
His idea was to move the start time of a school in Britain from 8.30 am to 10.00 am. Upon testing this theory at a chosen school, after a certain amount of time and a further wave of exams, he wasn’t surprised to see that the attendance levels had improved along with the general productivity of the school – and most importantly the students’ grades were up drastically.
So, just think of the improvements we’ll get if we were to adopt this idea into other spheres of society. Instead of overworked, overtired, coffee intoxicated people working in the hours when they would normally sleep, there will be naturally productive, focused, and full-fledged society of happy and useful people.
Those companies who force their employees to start working before 10 o’clock in the morning are contributing to the serious physical and emotional stress, as well as the chances of long term adverse health risk of workers. This happens as a result of the unhealthy working patterns which are very strict.
They are also a great reason as to why most people in U.S. drink more than 3 cups of coffee a day in order to keep themselves alert. From financial perspective, that’s 40 billion dollars spent on coffee annually.
